In the mid ’80s, when it was new, this Pinarello Montello road racer represented the state of the art of Italian hand built bicycle manufacture. Incredibly for a bike that rides this nicely, it would seem to have hardly been used, showing very few scars for being about three and a half decades old.
The Columbus SLX tubing wears lustrous candy apple red metallic paint. The paintwork is in overall very good condition, the decals are all intact, and the chrome rear triangle and fork are bright and shiny. The sloping fork crown and the seat stay caps are engraved with the GP initials, which is also cast into the strengthening webbing on the top of the bottom bracket shell. The rear brake cable is smoothly routed through the top tube.
As befits a frame of this calibre, this Montello was equipped from new with Campagnolo Record components. The brakes are adorned with blue Cobalto stones in the pivot bolts. The outer chainring has the Pinarello name repeatedly engraved. The GP motif is also engraved on the upper side of the down tube gear levers, and the Pinarello name is engraved on the reverse. The aero Cinelli stem features more Pinarello pantography.
It grips a Cinelli Giro d’Italia drop handlebar smartly finished with a new black leather wrap with white stitching by Almarc of Italy. A new Selle San Marco Concor saddle wrapped in black suede sits on top of a polished aero Campagnolo seat post. The rear derailleur wears its original pale grey plastic jockey wheels, shrouded with an aerodynamic aluminium housing. The 39 / 53 tooth chainrings show very little use.
The wheelset comprises a pair of 28 hole low flange hubs laced to Campagnolo rims with a bright silver finish, to which we have glued a fresh pair of Clement CF2001 tubulars with the correct pale sidewall colour of that period.
