Description

Gianni Motta was one of the great Italian professional racing cyclists of the 1960s and ’70s, a tall man and a powerfully strong athlete who won a succession of widely acclaimed victories in the great stage races and one day classics.

After his racing career was over Gianni Motta, like many famous racers before him, capitalised on his fame by selling bicycles with his name emblazoned on them. His racing machines are renowned for being particularly stiff, enabling very direct power transmission with little deflection of the bottom bracket by the pedalling stroke. Motta developed a range of racing bicycles which he called the ‘Personal’ collection, advertised in a period print catalogue as having being designed by “chi ha vinto per chi vuole vincere” (he who won, for those who want to win).

This champagne Gianni Motta Personal road bicycle dates from 1982. It is constructed from Columbus SL tubing. The two top tube lugs have been filed to very sharp points and the same treatment has been given to the down tube head lug. The  paint shows very little scuffing and scratching for its forty or so years and the yellow decals are similarly intact. After a professional paint treatment it almost seems gold coloured. The frame has chrome rear drop outs and is matched with a sloping crown Motta chromed fork.

It is assembled with a selection of Campagnolo components, mostly Super Record. The 170mm chainset features a custom drilled large chainring. The group-set was cleaned and polished, re-greased and adjusted to perfection. The rider will perch upon a nice black leather Selle Italia Turbo saddle mounted on a Super Record seat post.

The small flange 36 hole Super Record hubs are laced to Mavic GP4 rims with their legendary grey anodized finish. The wheels wear pale sidewall Continental tires for the correct period aesthetic. The headset, bottom bracket and hubs have been refreshed with new grease. This time warp bicycle rides very nicely indeed and is more than a perfect choice for the next l’Eroica style event.
