1981 Detto Pietro Time Trial machine with so little written about it that most of it’s history is still a bit of a mystery to us. What we do know is the beautiful Columbus air Tubing was used and it came with some pretty jaw dropping components. Columbus Air was the first attempt at an aerodynamic tubeset for racing bicycles. The initial version used a teardrop shaped down tube, seat tube and seat stays in conjunction with an oval top tube and chain stays, and a round head tube. The tubeset was designed primarily for time trials and aerodynamic efficiency.
We decided to bring this incredibly rare bike back to glory in the fashion of the great team mechanics of the time. Altering many of the components with aftermarket period correct titanium and alloy upgrades, we were able to keep the complete bike minus pedals under 8 kilos. The super record rear derailleur sports Omas titanium hardware while the Assos cranks got cobra alloy chainring bolts and even the extremely light and rare Modolo Kronos brakeset (of which only 2000 were ever made) got an upgrade with alloy mounting nuts. The sleek and slender Assos cranks are spinning on an ultra smooth Omas titanium bottom bracket, 3TTT Attacco 2000 Olympic stem holds firm the 3TTT Superleggero bars steering a Campagnolo super record alloy headset while the beautiful San Marco saddle Concor Superleggero sits atop an ICS modded Campagnolo seatpost that has been brought to a high polish and the whole fantastic package is rolling fast on a never been ridden set of Roval Wheels which were the first serious attempt at redesigning the wheel… full pun intended as here they actually succeeded in doing it! The radial non drive side along with low spoke high tension build on aero rims were truly revolutionary. The only flaw on this incredible machine comes on the Kronos brake levers as these were the only pair available to us as they are extremely rare in any condition.
In all… this was a wonderful experience building this gem and I hope the next lucky owner of this bike appreciates it the same way we do here at Cicli.
