Between 1968 and 1989 (excluding 1975-79, 1983 and 1984) there was a combination classification, which was given to the person who was highest ranked in all other competitions combined. In the later years the winner of this wore a yellow/polka dot/green/white/red jersey. From 1973 this also included the intermediate sprints classification, where points were awarded from sprints throughout a stage, but not at the end of the stage. The winner of this wore a red jersey. Both the combination classification and intermediate sprint classification were retired in 1989, and were consigned to the footnote of cycling history.
This combination classification jersey was awarded to Jean-François Bernard from the Toshiba team during the Tour de France 1987 that he finished on the podium after winning the time trial on the mont Ventoux. The jersey design incorporates the various leader jersey colors, including the polka-dot climber’s jersey, yellow leader’s jersey and green sprinter’s jersey.
