Lüders Pista Track Bicycle. 58cm

A piece of our own city here – a professional-quality track bicycle from Berlin’s own Karl-Heinz ‘Kalle’ Lüders. Something of a local legend, Lüders was responsible for building many track and road frames for international riders of all levels and disciplines, road and track, Olympics and Six Days. Lüders built out of his small premises on the Sophie-Charlotten-Str. in West Berlin until 2004, when he ceased production and sold the business. Lüders’ work is highly sought after by in-the-know collectors, especially as these bikes were seldom built up with anything less than the top components of the time. This frame set previously belonged to one particular Herr. Bublitz, who went to the trouble of having his name engraved on most of the components. It was only ever ridden on the banked planking of the velodrome, and has never seen use on the street.

Crafted from Reynolds 531 steel tubing, the frame set shows off Lüders’ trademark wide chain- and seat stays, and classic round fork blades with a flat fork crown. Wheel set consists of high-flange 36 hole Campagnolo Record Pista hub set, laced, tied and soldered to low profile Weinmann rims. Tubular Continental tyres, in good condition. 165mm Campagnolo Record Pista 151BCD crankset, with 52 tooth chainring – this is the coveted older crankset with the reinforced Campagnolo chainring. Real Campagnolo cog on the rear, with no lock ring. Wippermann Weiss-Stern track chain – the German track classic! Campagnolo Pista chrome steel headset. 110mm milled Cinelli 1A stem, with aluminium Cinelli ‘double knight’ logo handlebar. Fully-wrapped white cotton handlebar tape. Serial number: 1281117 on the bottom bracket shell – apparently this indicates the 117th frame built, in December 1981, which seems accurate. The frame is in excellent condition, with no dents or cracks. Paint is original. The only flaw is a very small scratch to the paint on the head tube.

All components work exactly as they should. Wheels are straight and true, and will be trued again before shipping. Chain and bar tape are new, and tyres hold air. The original Lüders engraved seat post bolt has sadly been a little rounded-out by a previous owner, but still works. We’ve left it in, because it is a characterful detail. Overall the whole bike is in very good condition. We’ve set the bike up according to our taste, with a view to preserving the classic look and style. In saying that, if you would like to make some small changes (saddle, bar tape etc), then often this is possible. We have a large inventory of classic components acquired over the last 13 years, and are happy to do our best to accommodate any request.
