Description

This black beauty is a Colnago Mexico road racing bicycle, constructed from Columbus SL tubing, dating from the late 1970s. The black paintwork is accented with contrasting yellow Colnago decals. Despite there being Colnago Super decals on the chain stays, these stays are round in cross section, without indentations, which is a distinguishing characteristic of the Mexico frame. The drive side chain stay and the fork crown are chrome plated. The club motifs on the flat fork crown have been detailed in yellow enamel, and the lower head lug has been similarly coloured. The yellow enamel treatment has also been applied to the wide flutes of the Campagnolo seat post. Interestingly, there remains a worn trace of a stripe of this yellow paint on the rear Campagnolo Record wheel hub. One wonders what identification purpose it once served.

The light weight frame and matching fork are fitted out with a period correct group of Campagnolo components. The Record crank sports a large 53 tooth outer chainring with ‘C’ and club motif pantography and milling, detailed in black enamel. The down tube mounted shifter levers have been drilled and filed out, and this hand detailing is accented in yellow. The Olympic Competizione handlebars and Colnago pantographed stem are 3ttt items, nicely complimented by a black suede Colnago edition saddle, also from 3ttt. The drop handlebars are wrapped in fresh black cloth tape, with Colnago motif bar end caps, and the brake levers feature comfortable reproduction pale rubber hoods. The Record hubs are laced to dark grey anodised red and gold label Mavic GP4 rims. The front wheel is radially spoked. The wheels are wearing new Clement tyres with pale sidewalls.

This bike has most certainly seen a fair few miles over the decades, but has survived in very good condition. The paint, whilst somewhat flat in places, has very few nicks and scratches. The contrasting yellow brake cables, decals and accents display a certain colourful Italian flair. This collectible bike now seeks an appreciative new owner for miles more smiles.
